HMS Seahawk Gliding Club - First Flight Free
(Service Personnel Only)
Join us for the cheapest way to learn to fly in the Navy. The Club meets at around 1000 every Saturday and Sunday to fly weather permitting. We muster at the Gliding Clubhouse; on the left past the Flying Training School but before you get to 700M Sqn. There is a big sign at the side of the road as the Clubhouse is in a dip. Even if there is no flying we usually get together on Saturday mornings as there are things to do in the Hangar.
We operate the aircraft from D3 hangar, which is the first of the 2 small hangars on the way to the Tower. It has a large sign on the side. We also fly during Easter and Summer leave.
We have an excellent fleet of aircraft; 2 dual seat for training and 2 single seat for the more advanced pilots. We have a brand new Super DIMONA motor glider, bought with a large grant from the Sailor's and Fleet Amenities Funds, which provides aero tows, advanced gliding training, field landing checks and cross country flying.
The cost of Membership is very low for Service personnel, at only £5.00 for the first year and charges for flying very reasonable, from £5.00 per wire launch or £16.00 per aerotow to 2000ft.
There are grants and bursaries available for enthusiastic service people and don't forget that your first flight is FREE paid for out of Adventure Training Funds.
The Sports Centre has copies of the fixture list. Particularly for the beginner the Royal Naval Gliding Association has organised a sponsored Gliding Week at the Joint Service Gliding Centre. The flying is free, paid for by Adventure Training Funds, with only a small personal contribution required. As adventure training all Service people are eligible for the time off as duty plus travel costs. It is an ideal opportunity for someone just learning to make rapid progress, it is entirely possible to achieve solo status in a week given the right aptitude and good weather!
For anyone stuck at Culdrose at the weekends the Gliding Club offers a great pastime and enjoyable social environment. Contact Mr George Kosak the Chief Flying Instructor, or
Tony Richards on 07791001384 or the Sports Centre.
